Solid Start

Old cats Under 14 team opened the 2016/17 season with a solid start and a great victory against a talented Farnham side.

Farnham won the toss and elected to start with the winds in the back, but going up field. The kick off was a good one from Old Cats, putting Farnham under pressure with a knock on. The forwards stepped up to the mark, the scrum was solid and gave Harrison the opportunity to collect the ball at the scrum do his darting runs with combinations of side steps (feet that would not look out of place in Strictly Come Dancing) and hand offs making all the valuable yards, which Farnham could not contain and he went over for a well-deserved try.

However this made Farnham more determined and they applied consistent pressure to the Old Cats defence. In fairness, Old Cats had the answers with displays of team work (from all players including our subs) and exceptional individual performances. Charlie was picking up exactly where he left last season, powering his way through Farnham and was rewarded with a great try.

Old Cats went into the break 10-0, but you always knew that this Farnham side was on the cusp of bringing this match back. They had strength in the forwards and pace in the backs.

At kick off and Farnham now downhill, used this advantage and went deep into Old Cats territory. Old Cats defence was solid and they kept them at bay for prolonged periods. Farnham started to get wise and shifted the ball out wide quickly – too quick for Old cats defence and they got their try, which was well deserved.

Now with their confidence up, Farnham started to apply their skills. Old Cats stepped up as well, but it seemed that this game was starting to slip. Then ‘cometh the hour and cometh the new boy Drew’. Picking up the ball deep in Old Cats territory he powered up the field to score a great individual try on his debut. Farnham still battled to the end, but Old Cats saw this out. Final score 17-5 to Old Cats. Old Cats have got areas to improve, but a solid start to the season and positive attitude which cannot be faulted.

Individual performances to pull out:
Josh D - absolutely nailed his tackles – on fire!
Harry – first to the break down, driving over and won turnovers on a number of occasions.
Charlie – powering runs up the field and proved a handful for Farnham.
Harrison – Power and Grace!

The man of the match though has to go to Drew. He got acclaims from Farnham & Old Cats coaches on a great debut performance.

Also some special thank yous:
Martin – Great referee. Let the game flowed when needed, but also picked up the important infringements, ensure flowing rugby was enjoyed by all.
Mike D – Feeding the hoards, with his yum yum cottage pie which was loved by all.
Kirstie and her band of happy helpers (Rose & Fleur), raising over £50 towards our tour.

Finally the rugby mums, dads, grandparents, siblings relations & and friends from both Farnham & Old Cats. Great atmosphere to the game, that spurred on both sides to play great rugby.
