Surrey League Division II: Old Cats 21 – 12 Chipstead

The superb playing conditions at Park Avenue on Sunday contributed to a great game of Rugby with Cats producing a skilful, gutsy, team performance to see off local rivals Chipstead.

With good hands, great lines of running and high levels of intensity from the off Cats built on a 14 – 0 half time score to lead 21 -0, 3 excellent attacking moves resulting in tries converted by Alex.

With 20 minutes left in the game - what may have seemed like a comfortable lead was to be thoroughly tested as a powerful Chipstead side started to ruck and scrum to good effect. A well worked forwards try brought them into the game, a determined run-in from halfway further reduced Cats lead.

During this period of the game concentration and organisation in defence was required and the boys delivered brilliantly, standing strong to repel the oppositions efforts. Cats settled and in true style started to counter attack. A scrum against the head, more good handling through the backs, line breaks and a number of excellent kick chases kept the opposition deep in their own half… another Cats score looked on the cards and would have come but for some fine Chipstead defensive cover, late-on an excellent Cats blind-side move narrowly missed the mark.

The game was played in great spirit. Committed, good rugby from both sets of players with deserved and sporting applause (for both sides) from a well populated touch line.

Old Cats: a real team performance and a deserved win that builds on the positive start we made at Brighton.
