Cats claim second spot with a good win over E&L Old Cats 33-14 Effingham and Leatherhead

In almost perfect conditions at Park Avenue, Old Cats showed their class to defeat an E&L side not lacking in talent and determination. In an open game, the main difference was the finishing of the boys who each time they visited the opposition 22 came away with points.

Cats started strongly keeping the visitors in their twenty two and when the ball was turned over Alex moved the ball left when Will H executed a switch in midfield with Max M who went over for the first of his three tries with a great finish. After messing up the restart Cats worked their way up the field and again found themselves in the oppo 22 where from a line out claimed by Owen a rolling maul saw the abrasive Joe James go over for his first score for Old Cats. Further scores ensued from Max M after excellent work from Harry on a kick chase whilst Harry was to go over himself after Joe and Will H combined to good effect after a charge down. With Joe kicking conversions from everywhere the score was 26-0 at half time.

The second half saw a number of penalities given away at scrum time and ruck where the boys were not as precise as they needed to be, whilst the visitors battling hard for a bonus point never let the intensity up. In such circumstances our defence held up well with Ollie R , Dobbo and Will B all competing hard in the tackle area. Rob also rumbled hard on a couple of occasions whilst Alex always kept a firm hand on the tiller. The visitors deservedly scored two tries though Cats scored the try of the match when from a quick tap on half way the ball went through several pairs of hands to see Max M score in the corner.

So ends an excellent league campaign which has seen the squad claim second place in a very competitive league where victories against Cobham and Esher were particularly sweet. This result should in theory see us up into Div 1 which is a credit to all the lads who have played this year which I count 28 in number.

Thanks to all the parents for their unwavering support, the MaCauliffes for the food and Steve Wagstaff for refereeing.

Thanks to Nicola and Ben for all of the great pictures.

Remember we have two friendlies to finish the season vs Dorking on Sunday 3rd at Home and vs Reeds on Sunday 10th
