Judging by a positive start to the season Old Caterhamians were looking to continue their success away to the Law Society in Raynes Park on Saturday.
Right from the kick-off, on a fine afternoon, the opposition pressed hard, but against the run of play conceded an early penalty, which was converted by Tom Clayton.
After further pressure, despite some strong defence by Cats pack, the Law Society bundled the ball over the line to take a 5-3 lead.
It was proving to be a tough, well contested match but Cats managed to regain the lead with three consecutive penalties from Clayton’s trusted boot and the half came to a close at 5-12.
The second half started in the same vain as the first, with the opposition’s pack providing to be a handful for Cats and their endeavours paid off with another pick and go try. With the conversion missed the lead was only cut to 10-12.
Gradually Cats began to believe in their abilities and started to move the ball around.
Pushing the Law Society deep into their half, inside centre George Perry crashed through the middle, setting up a juggling exhibition between the backs which saw the ball drop into the safe hands of Zachary Uddoh, who duly broke through a tight gap to score. Clayton converted to increase Cats lead to 10-19.
Now with the momentum Cats once again made their way down the pitch, this time it was second row Will Buxton that saw an opportunity to pick and go over the try line successfully, a reward for the tremendous defence display that he put on throughout the fixture. Two extra points took the visitors lead to 10-26.
Law Society struggled to find a response to the blows dished out by Cats. To make matters worse, a fatal handling error fell into the hands of Uddoh, whose smart offload saw winger Miles Smith with 60-metres of open grass in his path to comfortably touch down. Cats once again rewarded for their defensive efforts. A composed Zachary Rhodes took over the kicking duties to keep Cats at 100 percent off the tee for the day.
As the final whistle beckoned, Cats had secured a well-earned 10-33 victory and captain for the day George Perry gave his assessment after the match.
‘‘After a really tough first half I think we properly dug in deep, had words with ourselves and our training structure came through in the end for a really well thought out win, unlucky not to get the five points at the end but definitely building for the season and three from three.’’
It’s early days in the league but Cats are sitting on top of the Surrey Counties 2 and will be looking for further success next week back at home against Old Freemens.
